About the 2009 Forester(
specs for older models)
BASICS...
The Subaru Forester is an all-wheel-drive car-based
SUV introduced in 1998. Made by Fuji Heavy Industries in Ota Gumma, Japan.
The Forester has done very well in Insurance
Institute crash tests and various consumer magazine ratings, usually earning top
spots and recommended ratings.
2009 Summary.
The completely remodeled, all new 2009 Forester is
a slightly larger car than previous models, with a 103" wheelbase (3.6" longer
than previous years). The light beige interior is finally gone! New
double-wishbone rear suspension improves crash-worthiness and the same time
providing crisper handling, a quieter ride and increased interior space and
cargo room. The car is expected to start arriving in late March-early April with
customer sold pre-orders arriving first of course. Pre-orders are accepted
starting in early February. Now considered a light duty truck, it is allowed to
have privacy tinted windows.
PZEV (partial zero emission vehicles) are
now required on all non-turbos sold in CA, WA, CT, MA, ME, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI,
VT.
Standard features now include 6 airbags (dual
front, dual front side, and front and rear side curtain airbags with a rollover
sensor), VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) electronic stability control and TCS
traction control system, Immobilizer key, power windows/locks/mirrors, ac, CD
player, 4 disc anti lock brakes with Brake Assist, and much more.
Models are similar to the previous years but some
feqatures have been added and dropped. The models are the 2.5 X, X Premium, X LL
Bean, and the turbo XT and XT Limited. Engines are the same, Xs have the 170hp
2.5L 4 cylinder, the turbo XTs get the 224hp 2.5L 4 cylinder turbo version.
There are new colors. Interior choices are light Platinum or Off Black cloth or
leather depending on model. Again, no more beige!
4/7/08: End of L.L.Beans.
Subaru and LL Bean ends their partnership June 30, 08. 2009 Forester LLBean
production ends the first week of April, vehicles produced after that will be
the same car but called the 2.5X Limited with new model codes.
Canada:
the 09 Forester is importable into Canada
5/1/08: All Weather Package Forester
Premiums arriving early May. They were supposed to be in June but are early.

5/25/08 Motortrend.com compares the
Forester to the Nissan Rogue, Honda CRV, Saturn VUE Green Line,
Toyota RAV4. 'Three inches separate the herd in length (about the length
of an index finger, not very much).. lowest (horsepower): the CR-V's
and RAV4's 166, highest: the Nissan's and Subaru's 170hp... the all-new
2009 Subaru Forester, mind you-walks off in first place in this survey
because it apes almost everything the others do right and sidesteps
nearly all their pratfalls. It rides like a La-Z-Boy (credit the new
double A-arm rear suspension's 0.8-inch-longer travel), though it can
slightly meander at times. It steers with a sweet buildup of rim forces.
And unlike everything else here, affords this rare thing called "great
outward vision. Exorcized of cramped rear legroom and graceless styling,
the Subie's charm becomes hard to resist." June 08 issue

March 2008 from CarandDriver.com 'I have
only one friend who drives a Subaru Forester, but I submit she fits the Forester
mold: She is what MBAs would describe as an “urban adventurer,” often seen
driving with her three blond-and-brownish pound-rescue dogs with indeterminate
family trees. She has no immediate plans to drive the Yukon Trail but likes to
know that if she had to, her Forester is ready....
On the road, ride and handling are better than
you’d expect, regardless of horsepower or trim level. Cornering is relatively
flat, with little of the tipsiness found in older Foresters. Braking and
steering are linear and properly sensitive.
Off-road, the Subaru Forester won’t replace your
Jeep Wrangler, but with an available 8.9 inches of ground clearance, this is
more than just a cow trailer. There’s no low-range gearing, of course, but the
boxer engine has enough grunt to power up hills and through mudholes. It isn’t a
mountain goat, but it is, rather, a slightly more domesticated goat. Subaru has
spent 11 years building up customer goodwill for the Forester, and there’s
nothing about the new model that will threaten that. In fact, with the lower
price and added room, urban adventuring seems more appealing than ever...'
